The high priest calls upon you to pass judgement on this ale; will it be the broadsword or the thurible? Quarrel or prayer? From the depths as a bock, add an ale yeast, hop the shit out of it - and the holiest of bones has arisen. We join together and bring you the Cascadian dark IPA.

16oz can

Pours two fingers of pillowy off-white head into my Willi Becher. Most of the head fades within a few minutes, but there is a solid piece that lingers for some time after that. Lacing is wonderfully thick. Body is black with some significant brown hues when held to the light. Very nice looking beer.

Nose isn’t super complex, but it’s pretty nice. Mostly just getting pine, some maltiness hiding underneath, bitter chocolate. Smells like a black IPA!

On the flavor you definitely get some pine, but there are some subtle berry notes and even a little mint as well. I generally don’t like fruity hops in black IPA’s, but I guess it works. Finishes with a smooth and subtle chocolate - also not something I generally like in this style, but it works too. Up front this is definitely a PNW black IPA, hoppy, piney; but underneath it has some subtle desert qualities that work surprisingly well. Solid flavor.

Carbonation is medium. Somewhat light bodied, dare I say even refreshing. Bitterness is moderate. Definitely not a sweet beer, but it has some sweetness in the finish when the chocolate peaks in. Overall a really nice mouthfeel.

Drinkability is great, this is tasty and well balanced.

Overall a pretty unique and complex beer. I love this style so much.

Ruby and garnet colored body; clear; fantastic carbonation; thick, semi-creamy head, light khaki colored. Very fine spicy aroma; rich malty, caramel smell. Pleasant, unassuming taste; balanced malt sweetness with a moderate hop bitterness; rye-like; light peppery quality. Heavy body; smooth; gentle warmth.

While not extremely spicy per se, more malty than anything else, it brings a nicely balanced mix of malts and hops to the palate. Easy drinking with character.
