Black with small tan head. Lovely lacing. Big chocolate in the aroma and taste with some plum and red wine. Just a hint of rye whiskey spice. Creamy mouth feel. Delicious.

Reviewed from notes taken in Summer 2014.

Rye ale. 33cl brown glass bottle served into stemware in Tallinn, Estonia. Batch: 013. BB: 09/01/15. 5.90% ABV.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: None. No lacing.

BODY: Dark deep sanguine of above average vibrance. No yeast/lees are visible within.

Not a unique or special appearance for a rye ale. It looks appealing and has a great colour to it, though.

AROMA: Heavy fruit. Cherry. Raspberry. Caramel. Caramelized gooey fruit. Some spicy rye malt does creep in, but it's on the sweeter side overall, tending more towards amber malts and hints of burnt bread crust.

A pleasant aroma of mild aromatic intensity.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Syrupy and plump. Sweet and malty, though bread crust and burnt sugars help counter the amber malt sweetness. Fruit is dominant - dark cherry mainly. There's a kiss of slightly spicy rye malt, but it's faint. Caramel & caramelized fruit flavour is present throughout.

Smooth, wet, overcarbonated. Too thick. Heavy and full-bodied on the palate, suffering from a sticky feel.

I don't really like it, but it's a nice experimental brew. It doesn't commit enough to the rye (and that's a serious problem in a rye ale). Average duration, depth, and intensity of flavour. Unbalanced.

OVERALL: It's hard to drink given how syrupy and thick it is. Lacks pleasant flavours. I wouldn't get it again, but it's not awful.

A very smoky ale, with a long bitterness and notes of burnt bread and anise. Very complex beer yet drinkable. A very smooth mouthfeel too. Super tasty indeed..

Slightly hazy dark brown color with tan head. Aroma has spicy malt notes, dark bread and some tea-like hops. Taste starts with toasted malt, a bit of yeast, overall on the bitter side. Medium body with a quite smooth mouthfeel. Quite tasty but a bit unbalanced.

From XXXII. On sale. In Teku glass. Watching Adele's Life. My first rye beer. Very curious, with slight smokyness and tartness that far from being a burden improves it. May be because of the rye?

The colour is deep brown with a tint of red (60 EBC), the liquid is clear. The two finger head is compact and warm beige; it sinks slowly leaving some lacing on the glass.

The smell got distinct notes of rye bread and crisp bread. Unclean sweetness and vague spices. Cola beans and caramel.

The first taste is sweet with dark rye bread and dry caramel. It gets drier with some alcohol, vague spices and cola beans. Medium body. Spices, crisp bread and nutty salt flavours in the aftertaste. Some rustic bitterness. Caramel, salt and crisp bread in the finish.

The carbonation is medium to strong; the small fresh bubbles are long-lived. The liquid is semi-smooth.

A robust and distinct beer with just the right amount of rye.

Pohjala Brewery "Rukkirääk"
on tap @ Kaelderkold, Barcelona, Spain
4,5€ half pint / 7€ pint

Appearance: Slightly hazy deep mahogany brown body beneath a creamy, full head. Excellent lacing and retention.
Aroma: rye, dark caramel, soft chocolate fudge or cocoa powder, pine, smoke (possibly imagined as it was sampled at the bar).
Flavor: follows the aroma. The rye is spicy within a tapestry of milk chocolate and caramel/toffee. Nicely malty. Some dried dark-skinned fruitiness as well. Grassy, piney, and lightly citrusy hops (or is the fruitiness from the yeast?). Balanced. Dry finish with lingering rye spiciness and a drizzle of dark caramel.
Mouthfeel: Medium in body leaning towards medium-full. Gently bristling median carbonation.
Overall: Impressive! The rye comes through in just the right amount so that it's clearly noticeable but not overdone. Beyond that the malt is rich in character as well, but not overly malty; and the subtleties of yeasty fruitiness and hops keep it vivid and interesting rather than letting it just become a showcase of maltiness.

Great, great beer. I buddy of mine brought me 1 from is deep brown dark beer with an earthy hops aroma, some smokiness, the taste is of breads and malty and smoky with a hint of citrus from the hops. What it surprise me the most is the body of this Estonian Brew is a full bodied beer very velvety and creamy. Nice label too.
