black color. Thin, tanned head. Roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruits, wood, and sherry in the aroma. Moderately sweet, warming. Very good evening sipper.

De Labirratorium. En copa Mahou Barrica. Jugando a Fortnite y Larry Wet dreams. Abv muy bien oculto para lo elevado que es. Las notas a madera y Pedro Jiménez se notan, y le aportan algo de interés, pero no lo suficiente como para que merezca la pena sobre una imperial stout sin ellas

A great imperial stout, black, nice dark tan head which lingers until a gentle lacing...looks like most imperials!
Taste is everything you would expect with a a quality imperial stout, dark roast malts, dark fruits, slight smokiness, burnt toffee, juicy dates, all balanced with a gentle bitterness.
This would of been a perfect buy again imperial stout if it wasn't for its excessive sweetness! which if am honest after a few initial sips, soon becomes cloying. The mouthfeel is rich, heavy and full, the high abv of 13.9% is instantly drowned and masked in a sweet syrupy combination of raisins, burnt toffee, juicy dates, and delicate hints of cream sherry...Like i said, if they could drop the sweetness just a wee tad, then this would be an instant winner! as it is its a great imperial stout, but an occasional sipper and not one you would feel the need to open another during the same session. Would i buy again? ...possibly!

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet black chocolate notes with some light liquor notes is pleasant. Taste is a mix of sweet black cholate notes with light notes of Xeres and light roasted malt with a sweet finish. Body is full with nice creamy texture and good carbonation with light warming alcohol. Solid barrel-aged stout but I was expecting more form the Xeres barrels.

A- After fighting through some wax the 330ml bottle pours into a snifter with a deep black body and a dark cocoa cap. The head makes it to a half finger high with a frothy texture before dying out to nothing fairly quickly. Lacing not an option for this brew.

S- Smokiness comes to mind right away as does a ceiling high pile of dark dried fruits and sherry notes. The stout seems almost secondary here but then again some of the aforementioned could be coming from the base beer. Wet dark toasted oak, peat smoke, straight char, roasted barley, bitter toasted nuts, prunes, dates, plums, vinous grapes, cherries/berries and super bitter dark chocolate come to mind.

T- Sweeter than I expected based on the aroma but not so surprising considering the hefty ABV and a small dive into PX sherry. The bitter, smoky and pure charred stout plays well with the sweetness but ultimately it is left just a bit too far on the sweet side. Almost like a compote or syrup made from all of those rich dark, dried fruits in the world. Prunes, raisins, plums, black cherries, cranberry, dark grapes and dates all come to mind contrasted by intensely bitter dark chocolate and pure burnt barley. The wood comes out in the aftertaste with some toasted oak notes.

MF- Syrupy and gigantic body with a fairly high level of carbonation that helps curb some of the sweetness and accentuate the fruit and stout notes. Puffy and slightly creamy but about as slick and oily as can be. Ends fairly warm but not feeling 14%.

"Did you know Pedro Ximinzez is probably the sweetest wine in the world" totes the PX website, that comes into play here but Pohjala certainly chose a beast of a stout to put into the barrels to try to cut into the wine's flavor. It is sweet but by today's standards this would be somewhere in the mid-high range, somehow. Aggressive, slightly boozy and full of intense, complex flavors. A fun ride absolutely worth a shot as you don't get this dark roast, sweet and massive dark fruit play all the time.

Bottle at Las Buenas Pulgas, served in a balloon glass. Black color,. Medium brown head with big bubbles and medium retention. Aroma of wine, Pedro Ximenez, charcoal, prunes, chocolate, anise, varnish, liquorice, leather, molasses, pepper. Full body, creamy texture, good carbonation, sweet and hot finish. Taste follows the aroma, with a little bit of chili. Wonderful.

A 330ml red waxed bottle with a best before date of 10th June 2022. Poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: Black in colour with a half finger brown head that dissipated quickly while leaving only sparse spotty lacing.

Aroma: Toasted malts, tar, chocolate, brown sugar, sherry, wood, licorice, dark fruit, plum.

Taste: Sweet, sweet malt, light roast, chocolate, sherry, wood, syrupy, dark fruit, raisin, with notes of mixed berries.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall: It’s got good complexity, but due to the sweetness, it was definitely a sipper. It was probably too sweet for my taste and it showed as it took a long time for me to finish.

A: Pours a near pitch black color with a small head that retains fairy well

S: Roasted malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, coffee, and lots of barrel character including tannins, sweet sherry, oak, and vanilla. Very complex

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the dark fruit and sweet sherry and then picks up the roasted malt, dark chocolate, tannins, and oak. Quite sweet to start but mellows nicely thanks to the barrel character and booze. Finishes with lingering sherry and oak

M: Medium-full bodied with low-moderate carbonation

O: A very good stout that hides its nearly 14% extremely well. Not hot at all and nicely sweet thanks to both the malt and sherry characters. Definitely makes for a great sipper and dessert beer. Highly recommended

Pours a deep pitch black color with a small top off dark-beige head that dissolves quickly.
Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel,
licorice, wood, raisins, plums, bread and sherry. The taste is sweet with a really malty background. Strong notes of roasted malts, wood and chocolate in the flavour that is really nice ballanced with the sweet notes off sherry and dark fruits. The finish has some slight bitterness that goes allong great with the roasted background. The aftertaste is long and strong. Mouthfeel is creamy and oily with a medium carbonation and a full body.
As this has to be the strongest beer i ever had that alcohol is hidden amazingly well in the flavour.
A really impressive and delicious imperial stout.

Very nice stuff. The pedro Ximenez barrels works lovely, as always. You've got a certain complexity in it. It's thick and deep. It remains balanced all along

10 February 2020 - Beer #25

Price: $11.99 at Clinton Gourmet Corp. in Manhattan

Appearance: 4 - black black with nearly no head. Nearly perfect, just a tad thin looking.

Nose: 5 - lots of nose, lots of barrel. Intense barrel on the nose.

Taste: 4 - cloyingly sweet on the back end. Tastes great, but it flattens out quickly.

Mouth: 4 - as the appearance suggested, it's a bit thin. Nice amount of carbonation, and hanging around until next week, just too thin.

Overall: 4 - a very nice barrel aged imperial stout. A bit sweet and a bit thin, but extraordinarily pleasant.

Cheers!
