Dark brown color with just a bit of tan foam with big bubbles. Aroma has some spicy barrel notes and some booze with dark malts in the background. Taste is spicy with some rye bread and whiskey, sweet and malty at first but the finish has a light roasted grain spiciness. Medium body, soft carbonation. Quite nice overall but a bit too spicy for my taste.

Barrel aged multigrain breakfast ale
APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, bubbly but creamy, light tan head with very good retention. Black body with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a solid bubbly cap and clings to the glass a bit. Ring remains but leaves no lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Barrel and spirit notes on the nose, with what smells like cognac and whisky, perhaps. Some wood aromas with vanilla and cream character in there. Milk chocolate and butterscotch notes as it opens, with other sweet candy like toffee and caramel. Pretty nice.
TASTE: Lots of sweet candy notes up front with toffee, caramel, butterscotch, milk chocolate, vanilla and cream initially. Some woody and spirit qualities are there as well, with more alcohol at the swallow. A bold and lingering finish of wood, vanilla, milk chocolate and plenty of boozy alcohol as well. This is probably sweet whisky barrels.
PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium carbonation. Enough weight on this one, creamy enough as well, goes down fine and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.
OVERALL: Good stuff. The barrel flavor is a little sharp, but it still works. The base beer is quality and the look and feel are solid as well, so the perhaps less-than-ideal barrel has a good supporting cast. Well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the style. Recommended.
