Got this from the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
Brewed for Billie’s Craft Beer Fest
APPEARANCE: Pours out pitch black and yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, semi-creamy, dark tan head with good retention. Pitch black body with higher levels of carbonation for the style. Head slowly recedes to a full wisp cap. A half wisp and ring remains but leaves no real lacing down the glass. Good looking and a solid head on this one.
SMELL: Lots of leather and tobacco, licorice aromas, lots of molasses and roasted grain on the nose. Bold and aromatic.
TASTE: Boozy with tobacco and leather up front. Big burst of tobacco, licorice and sweet molasses at the swallow, yielding to a big, flavorful finish of tobacco, leather, anise, sweet molasses, lightly roasted flavors and hints of bitter chocolate as well. Very molasses, tobacco and anise forward. Euro style to the tee.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, a bit prickly, goes down fine and finishes a touch mouth-coating on the palate. Some solid heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is a flavorful stout in the classic European style. Lots of tobacco, licorice and molasses all over this one for sure. It’s flavorful and aromatic, with a solid bed of booze in support. I’m not sure this profile is right up my alley in this style, but this example is certainly done well, so hats off to that. Check it out if you like your stouts Euro style. This one won’t disappoint. Really, really good. Recommended.
