Copenhagen 11/2 2020. 33 cl bottle from Mikkeller Webshop. Capped with annoying wax all over it. Black and white picture of the moon with a sombre red background.

Pours opaque dark brown with a small light beige head. Disappears after a minute leaving only a thin rim of foam running along the side of the glass. No lacing.

Aroma is intense, quite sweet with a strong herbal touch reminding me of a bitter as they make them in the Baltics. Dark fruit soaked in alcohol, woody oak, dark alcohol. Herbal touch of cardamom, vanilla and anise.

Light carbonation. Thick, viscous, smooth, soft texture. Just enough carbonation to avoid it being flat.

Flavor is intense and very sweet. Followed by a lighter sour bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet. Prominent presence of Lingering. Finish is boozy and spicy.

Solid barrel aged Baltic porter even though that I must admit I prefer the regular Talveöö.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of bourbon and vanilla with some black chocolate notes and coconut notes with some light rum notes is quite nice. Taste is a nice mix of bourbon and rum notes with just enough residual sugar notes and light coconut notes with some vanilla with light alcohol notes also perceptible. Body is pretty full with good carbonation. Enjoyable double barrel stout with good balance of flavours.

Bottle at Las Buenas Pulgas, served in a balloon glass. Black colour, big beige head with short retention, good lacing. Aroma of cardamom, whiskey, vanilla, candied fruits I can't perceive coconut. Medium body sticky texture, flat carbonation. Bitter finish. Taste is mostly ginger, and similar to the aroma. Good, not great.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of caramel malt, cardamon and a strong rum barrel presence, with notes of brown sugar, lime and hints of oak. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by the caramel malt, cardamon and rum barrels, with notes of brown sugar, cinnamon, lime and oak, as well as lighter chocolate and coconut, with just a hint of vanilla. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some cardamon, chocolate and boozy rum presence lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation.

This is quite dominated by the cardamon and rum barrels, with only light coconut and very little vanilla or bourbon presence coming through here, making it lean heavily towards the boozy and spicy side of the flavor spectrum. It's all right at the end of the day, but I expect a little more finesse from Pohjala, with the balance really not being all that impressive here. Still, it never really gets quite too sweet or boozy, I would just wish for a little more malt complexity and stronger bourbon presence.

Got this one from Duvel guy in Utrecht

From a bottle into a snifter
Cellar Series
Rum and bourbon BA imperial Baltic porter brewed with coconut, vanilla and cardamom

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a two finger, medium looking, foamy tan head with decent retention. Black body with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head fizzes down to a thin wisp and clings to the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving some very nice lacing down the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Wood notes, bourbon, coconut and vanilla aromas, some butterscotch and some lightly roasted notes as well. Medium strength.

TASTE: Woody and spirit heavy up front, with whisky flavors, alcohol and some light caramel and vanilla sweetness at the swallow. This is quite spirit heavy. Medium finish of bourbon, wood, light caramel or butterscotch sweetness, some vanilla flavors, a touch of roasted character, as well as some boozy spirits linger on the palate.

PALATE: Lighter body and medium carbonation. Foamy on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Some decent heat lingers. Too light and foamy, unfortunately.

OVERALL: Some of Pohjala’s barrel aged stuff is wonderful, but this is not Pohjala at its best. The feel is too light and foamy and the flavor profile is spirit heavy and boozy, while the base porter and adjunct additions are lack luster. This may have turned out better without seeing a barrel, but as it is, the barrel character is just too much like straight spirit. Not one I’d recommend jumping through hoops for.
