Sampled on tap at Popeye in Tokyo. This might be the strongest alcohol by volume beer made in Japan. This barley wine was aged 3 years.

This barley wine poured a dark, mahogany (black-red) color with thin white foam. The smell was modest but included molasses, malt, and a hint of alcohol. The taste was very nicely balanced with molasses and caramel flavors predominating, and with a hint of the high alcohol presence coming through. The mouthfeel was light and airy on the tongue - pure pleasure. The body was medium and the carbonation low. This was an extremely drinkable barley wine, quite suited to sipping. Very nice.
