Nevermind the conditions. This Brown Ale’s father was a Mudder, and his mother was a Mudder. This is a true and true American Brown Ale with a subtle hop presence at the turn and toffee, caramel, and coffee notes waiting at the finish line. When they’re calling for rain, dig in deep and grab a Mudder. It’s a sure thing.

On tap at Cap City Diner in Columbus Ohio into pint glass. Pours dark ruby red/brown color with a small head with solid retention and lacing. Aromas and flavors of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, dark bread/crust, wood, peppercorn, pine, herbal, floral, grass. Medium pine/herbal/char bitter finish. Medium carb and body, balanced creamy/bready malt, sticky/resin hop, and chalky roast mouthfeel. Lingering bitter drying. Minimal acrid/astringency. Adequate hopping and a bit more roasty than most browns, but it's delicious with rich malt complexity.

12 ounce can, canned on 171108 (November 8, 2017). Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy reddish/brown color with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells like bready malt, nuts, toffee, caramel and citrusy/grassy hops. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some coffee flavor in there too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. If you like hoppy (but not overpoweringly so) brown ales or just brown ales in general, pick this one up. I liked it, but I do think it's hoppier on tap compared to the canned version. $9.99 a 6-pack.

Can dated 11-08-17. Nonic pint.

A: pours a light brown with 1 finger khaki head and initially a lot of carbonation that dies down quickly.

S: fuggles! Woodsy hop and breakfast blend nutty coffee notes. I love it! A hoppier brown on the nose, for sure.

T: largely follows the nose; arrives slightly sweet and bready. Mid palate is toasted whole wheat bread and a slight citrusy and grassy woodiness. The ending is not very bitter, but does have a profound medicinal hoppiness. Perhaps not quite as hoppy as the last Bell's Best Brown I had, but more so than Seventh Son, and more so than Mt. Carmel.

M: lighter end of medium and surprisingly clean and low carb.

O: a really great hoppy brown ale! My only detraction would be that it is a touch hoppy for the style, but that is pretty typical for beers these days, and this is one of my favorites from Land Grant.

I tried this at the Columbus airport. It poured a murky brownish amber with white head that left some lace. The scent had hints of dark bread. The taste was bitter leaning and not overly easy to drink. The chocolate was dark and acidic. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's average at best.

tap

Pours hazy brown, yellowish white lacing for a head.

Aroma is of biscuit and caramel.

Biscuit and caramel follow through in the flavor with some woody undertones and a dry hop finish.

Medium body with tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

Solid brown ale, nothing special. Everything there is good, but nothing much to distinguish this from any other brown ale out there. Worth a try if you're there and looking for a milder medium dark beer.
