I tried a pint of this beer off the tapper at the taproom whilst curling with mini kegs. It poured a clear dark amber with tan head that left some lace. The scent had toasted grain notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with semi sweet caramel malt base with roasted grain and german dunkel presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

Can dated 8-3-17. Paneled mug.

A: pours an opaque black, with glints of brown around the edges, two fingers of light tan head recedes to a thick cap. No lacing.

S: roasted sweetness. Haven't had many Schwarzbiers, but the others I've had were not this roasted. This smells like a robust porter. Decidedly coffee-like, Colombian to be precise.

T: dry. Roasted and dry. Almost smoky. Slightly savory. Refreshing. The smell suggested this would not taste like a lager, but remarkably, it does. Full roasted smoky almost meaty flavor on the palate that finishes pretty cleanly with a hint of lingering smoke, salt, and umami.

M: lighter end of midweight and relatively clean; deceptive. Less carbonation than I am accustomed to with lagers, so pretty much perfect. Some lingering slickness, but it is s dark beer, after all.

O: this could be a regular summertime dark beer. Very clean, lightweight, and not sweet at all. Roasty and refreshing. The black and gold may be leaving Columbus (I hope not), but I hope this beer (and its gold counterpart, Glory) stick around a lot longer.
