Aroma - Moderate roast followed by coffee and cacao. Resiny, dank, piney and green hop aroma is moderate as well. Low brown sugar and prune and even lower molasses and hint of tobacco.
Appearance - Black in color with ruby highlights when held to the light. Pours a large dark tan head with excellent retention.
Flavor - Assertive bitterness, hop flavors of pine and resin. Malt is moderate roast, coffee/espresso, and bakers chocolate. Balanced to the hops but malt is very supportive. Clean fermentation character, alcohol evident but not hot. Finishes fairly dry with lingering roast and bitterness, both pleasant. Pretty impressive on balance of flavor of hops and malt and leaves you ready to open another can.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, low roast astringency and even lower hop burn. Alcohol again is apparent but not hot. I enjoy the water profile, not to dry but supportive of the ipa style and didn't let the roasted grain go to astringent or harsh.
Overall - Very impressed with this "Cold Black IPA". I get the best of a black IPA with a very clean fermentation character. One of the best Black IPA's I've ever had. Makes me curious to see what others are doing with the style. Great to see a brewery pull it off so well. Although I don't get a large variety of hop flavors out this beer, what is there is growing on me and my 4 pack of 16oz cans didn't survive the weekend, even with several fridges full of beer.
