This daringly simple IPA was crafted using only the essentials: special amber malt and Ella hops. The Devilfish’s tropical notes and smooth finish are best savoured with a spicy seafood dish.

Appearance - Pours a dark amber with three fingers of bubbly off-white head.

Smell - Citrus hops, bready malts, tropical fruit (mango, pineapple) , caramel.

Taste - Balanced flavours of citrus hops and bready malts. Sweetness of caramel runs through it, along with essences of tropical fruits. Bitterness is at a moderate level.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A tad sticky on the palate with a lingering citrus hop aftertaste.

Overall - I don't think I've ever tried a single malt and single hop version of an IPA. There's a nice balance in flavour that starts initially with citrus hops, then followed by the bready malts. Stunning appearance.

650 ml undated bottle into pint glass. Pours a clear golden amber color with an off white head. Initial impression is a nice balance between the tropical fruit and floral notes of the Ella hops, and the caramel malt. Enough hops bite to make it interesting, but enough malt to keep it from being one dimensional.
My first offering from Old Yale, and I'm favorably impressed!

Maybe I bought an off bottle or maybe it was old or something (no best before or bottling date on the label), but this beer was undrinkable. As soon as I opened the bottle, it started spewing off foam, barely managed to pour a quarter glass of it before the head started overflowing.

Smell was terrible - this oxidized, metallic smell with whiffs of faint herbal hops and sickly sweet malts.

It tasted as well as it smelled - godawful. Metallic. There might've been some hops in there. I couldn't tell, I was too busy getting lead poisoning.

Not even gonna bother with any other descriptors, really. This beer was a drainpour after two sips.

edit: I mean, even if this was eight months old, it's still unbelievably bad. I've had older IPAs that have tasted better. Pretty sure it's infected.

650ml bottle - didn't quite get the 'SMaSH' meaning until I, y'know, read the label! A single-malt ('special amber'), and single hop (Ella) affair.

This beer pours a clear, bright medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves a bit of hanging Space Invaders bad guy lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of sugary mandarin orange and Texas red grapefruit citrus, pink bubblegum, muddled, but generous tropical fruit, caramel/toffee malt, and further musty, floral, and perfumed hop bitters. The taste is grainy, kind of biscuity caramel malt, some mixed and muted tropical fruit esters, wan and wandering yeast, a touch of stale black licorice, and a complex array of herbal, leafy, floral, and weirdly vegetal hoppiness.

The bubbles are adequate in their supportive and sometimes playful/come hither frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and equally insouciant in its attempt at smoothness - the spicy and floral nature of this particular hop the culprit, apparently. It finishes trending dry, the graininess mostly bled out, and the same set of villains from the mouthfeel strengthening their hold.

I gotta say, this one showed real promise at first, with all those sweet tropical fruit aromas, and such. However, that was never really delivered upon, as the floral and spicy essences come around, and in a rather clumsy, and disjointed manner. Overall, not a bad brew, and adventurous, sure, but the end result is not worthy of repeat engagement.
