Flying Lion Rye Stout
On tap at Stout, Seattle.
Black brown with chunky tan head that trails. 4
Coffee, leather, and Raisinettes - deep. 4.25
Big fig, espresso, a hit of rye spice, vague red berry, black pepper, and a tone of roast. 4.25
Medium and a bit, chewy, clean. 4.25

Hefty. Succulent nose, all big notes - coffee, rye - plus a serious perceived bitterness end from roast plus Willamette. A proper heavyweight. 4.25

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, with slight light transmission in the glass and a fine, one finger light brown head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt with light char, cocoa, a hint of rye. Flavor is dark, well toasted malt with light char, coffee, cocoa, rye bread with a hint of tartness. Finishes with hop and coffee bitterness and residual semi-sweet toasted malt and rye. The finish starts semi-dry, but leaves light linger sweet malt flavors. Kind of interesting. Pleasant medium body with good creaminess. A nicely made American stout with good char and toast elements to the malt and nice cocoa and coffee notes. The lightly hopped finish seems more coffee bitter than hops; I could have mistaken this for a coffee stout. The rye is deftly handled, adding just a touch of rye spiciness and tartness, giving this a bit of a foreign export profile. Nicely done.

I had this beer on-tap in a pint glass at the brewery.

Appearance: totally black with a layer of dark tan foam. Quite attractive indeed.

Smell: sweet and nicely complex from the rye. Definitely a sweeter stout, but I dig it.

Taste: roasty, sweet and just a dash of spicy. Balanced and interesting.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this is a darn tasty beer. Good stuff!

On tap (nitro) at Beveridge Place Pub.

Appearance is dark as night, with a big foamy head. Rye dominates the aroma and the flavor. The beer is just a little bit tart. There's some bitterness on the finish, but it seems to come from the dark roast, not from hops. Mouthfeel is very creamy (nitro, remember).

This is a very nice stout, provided you do like rye!
