Wilson Potter Brewery "Rum In The Black"
cask via handpump @ The Lion Tavern, Liverpool, England 29 May 2015
Notes: The barkeep informs me that this beer is from a 6 barrel microbrewery that's run by two women in North Manchester. Clear mahogany brown-almost-black body beneath a dense head of khaki foam that exhibits average retention but excellent lacing - obviously the softer carbonation and light to light medium body have a say in that. Across the palate it's silky smooth. The aroma delivers a fairly generic fruit character although there is some apple and pear to it. Dark malt follows, and carries you into the flavor where you find dark caramel, a slight nuttiness, some roast, an additional hint of berry, some grassy and leafy hops, and a soft suggestion of spicy anise. A median to stiff bitterness balances it, and it finishes dry and lingering with bitterness and a slight roastiness. I'm not sure where the rum comes in, but I'm informed they also produce the same stout as "In The Black" so perhaps this is aged in rum barrels? I don't find any oak. Perhaps it's just a flavoring, or maybe they've actually added rum?
