Gambrinus "La Do-Majeur" "II IPA Rousse en Baril de Rhum"
on tap @ the brewpub
10 oz. for $7.75 Canadien
Appearance: Very hazy russet brown body beneath a creamy 1/2" of light tan foam. Head retention and lacing slightly better than average.
Smell: Sweet caramel malt, spice, hint of dull smoke.
Taste: Rum and oak come through in the flavor over the carameilsh malt, which seems lacking. The alcohol is clear. Dry and spicy, oaky finish. A bit hot given just 10% abv. Perhaps some rum from the cask was absorbed from the wood via osmosis.
Mouthfeel: Medium leaning medium-light. Median carbonation. Smooth, but hot.
Overall: The aging in a rum barrel has given this beer an interesting side, but overall it doesn't quite go beyond the effort that was put into it. It's just a little too hot, and there's not enough malt to it to handle the alcohol or the rum barrel, and it ends up feeling a little disjointed. Still, it retains a bit of charm, and it's a great sipping beer.
