Gambrinus "Veuve Noire" Milk Stout with Oatmeal
on tap @ the brewpub, 2 Octobre 2014
10 oz. for $3.70
The name means "black widow" but I hardly see that as appropriate given that her bite is extremely painful and may end in death, while this beer at just 4.5% abv is anything but painful or deadly!
It has the appearance of an Irish stout, black beneath a smooth and creamy head of light tan (it's served via nitrogen dispense). The aroma is limited as well, but it gives up some roastiness. The flavor however is much fuller, delivering black chocolate with a hint of fudge, creamy coffee, and some background hops. It's clean, rich, and balanced with the gentle sweetness of the malts offset by dark-malt acidity, leading to a dry, bitter finish.
