Firebrand Brewing - Graffiti IPA
American IPA – 5.5% - 330ml bottle – Best Before Jan. 2016
Appearance: Poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Cloudy, deep golden colour, with one finger of white head - typical American style craft to IPA look at. Also has a very standard malt and hop bill (Maris otter, centinneal, Amarillo & cascade).
Aroma: No surprises here - New world hops and Maris otter. Smells very similar to brewdog punk IPA.
Taste: Very hoppy. Straight away the new world hops bitter the side of the tongue while the get the citrus in the middle and a dry, alcohol taste to finish.
Mouth feel: As above really, instantly bitters and dries up the sides of the mouth and this then creeps all over the palate during the finish. Medium body - quite nice considering the abv of only 5.5%.
Overall: I like this. Although I started to get a bit tired of the beer market being flooded by these hop forward craft IPAs, they are enjoyable and this one is up there with the best of them in my opinion. I especially like that this American style IPA, unlike so many others, is not pretentious in its packaging. With a standard black label and white writing. I would revisit this, and could session it, if the occasion was right, even though I'm more of a malt and yeast connoisseur than a hop head. 8 / 10.
