I just assume any beer with 'summer' in the name will be light, golden and clear but Rainhard's Hopped Up Summer Ale isn't really either; this rather nectarous looking liquid is deep with both haziness and colour. Where it lacks depth is head; its feeble foam struggles to maintain even the outline.
The hoppiness of this bouquet is as sharp as a butcher's knife. Scores of citrus and tropical fruits eagerly, excitedly rush forward and are followed by more understated notes of pine, mint and herbs. Notable also are the toasty, toffee-ish aromatics of cara malts. This is a good thing because...
Refreshment on a hot day is nice but nourishment is essential. The sun doesn't just make you thirsty it depletes your system. It makes sense (even for a beer called 'Hopped Up' Summer Ale) to provide some revitalization by way of lightly nutty malty goodness whilst still offering breezy, citrusy refreshment.
Mind you, that added sustenance is not stuffing. The overall profile is still slim enough (5%, 30 IBU) that multiple servings is a definite possibility. The fruity and floral notes that occupy the finish are inviting and evoke quick, repeated sipping. Perhaps most importantly, it drinks almost as good warm as it does cold.
A sunny weather beer that's both restorative and refreshing - now that's something I can get behind. Like many of Rainhard's initial offerings, Summer Ale shows a balanced-minded approach that emphasizes hops but not at the exclusion of malts. It's a recipe so good they might want to make it year-round.
