IT'S BACK!!!:.....
from their website:
"HOPERATION IPA - 7.2% ABV, 72 IBUs
For this brew we tested some new experimental hops and rounded it out with sweet orange peel, as well as Galaxy and Citra hops. We ended up with a delicious IPA packed with flavors of papaya, passion fruit, citrus and a hint of mint! This beer has a creamy mouthfeel and a refreshing tropical finish."
But where's the 'experimental hop'? If it's pummeled by Galaxy & Citra & orange peel . . . How can we taste it?
It is very good, a nice citrusy IPA. 7.2% - strong enough to defend itself. But my dream of a new hop-hero was turned into a blend. Cheers!

These guys appeared out of nowhere a few years ago with a fantastic initial lineup of IPAs, including one that you could find a six pack of for $10 that clocks in at 9% (or so) and was just stellar, so I've been loosely following their output since, and most of their beers have been pretty good. There was a lime-driven sour in there, a rauchbier, a decent brown ale, a very solid pilsner, and a few more. So when they came out with an "experimental hop" IPA featuring Citra and Galaxy on top of the unnamed varietals, I was excited to pick up a can to give it a shot. And that can art is amusing as hell.
Pour here is pretty excellent. This is a straw-colored IPA with a dense look to it, but which nevertheless has a bright and airy appearance featuring a cloudy head of pure white foam that lingers for over five minutes before slowly sinking to a half-finger, leaving behind spectacular lace. Wow, this is a homerun in terms of looks alone... let's hope it lives up to this pour with an exciting and engaging nose and flavor profile! (Note: this does have some floaties in it once the whole can is poured, though it really did require me inverting the can entirely to get them in my glass; if you don't like floaties or yeast in your nice-looking NEIPAs, just don't pour the last half-ounce!)
The nose is definitely not a "typical" NEIPA-type scent, that's for sure. Melon, orchard fruit (pear, plum?), intense dank grassiness, mango, and an herbal, almost tannic note. I don't know the "experimental" hops used but I will say that the overall profile reminds me of some other unusual hops I've seen used in beers recently... perhaps Idaho 7/007, Rakau, and Huell Melon. It's pretty refreshing to see some weird stuff happening in NEIPAs, as all the "tropical/juicy" beers are kinda played out (though I still like them for the most part, I will say).
Flavor consists of slight mint and herbal hops crossed with some grassiness, tangerine, tea-like flavors, biscuity malt, a touch of wheat, and a backend that highlights the unusual orchard-esque fruit notes I discerned in the nose. Apricot, plum, and some melon with a light hint of citrus and a decently strong bitterness. This is definitely bizarre, but it's not bad. It feels messy and more than a little unfocused, for sure, but I think its heart is in the right place. Feel is medium with a drying element in the finish, featuring somewhat more carbonation and character (mineral?) than I am used to in the NEIPA tradition. Huh. Probably wouldn't go for a sixer of this one, but it was fun to try.

This beer smells like a fart, and the taste was just plain bad. I am totally disappointed. I was holding a 6 pack of G fresh, which is awesome, and someone talked me into trying this. What a bad decision.

This doesn't come quite as close to Fresh Pick but it's a close analog. Similar light haze and color, just doesn't deliver on the nose, mouthfeel, and taste especially with the soft, pillowy melon notes Fresh Pick (in some batches, batch variation is a problem) offers. It's worth trying, comes at a good price point, and is worth trying. They should identify the hops used, but whatever, it's got a cool can design.

FORT HILL HOPERATION 8/14/19
New brew with "experimental hops." Poured from the 12 oz. can into a Fort Hill straight shaker half pint.
a; Semi-clear and later translucent (as dregs were poured in) gold with an inch thick white head which receded to thick surface foam and dense lacing.
s; Fruit cup with a net leaning to pear.
t; Slightly dank light fruit with light to moderate bitterness (72 IBU) which builds and lingers on the dry finish.
m; Medium, very good body and good carbonation tingle.
o; Interesting and tasty IPA with a lingering slightly dank fruitiness that makes you want more. Can't disagree with their website blurb: "For this brew we tested some new experimental hops and rounded it out with sweet orange peel, as well as Galaxy and Citra hops. We ended up with a delicious IPA packed with flavors of papaya, passion fruit, citrus and a hint of mint! This beer has a creamy mouthfeel and a refreshing tropical finish." A worthy alternative to their other fine mid-strength IPA, Fresh Pick.
