Hermit Thrush Brewery "Truthy Cardinal"

$9.50 @ Capone's Restaurant / Take-out, Norristown, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Pours a mostly clear, just slightly hazy, distinctly orange colored body beneath a finger-thick head of bubbly white that shows great retention for a sour beer. Plumes of tiny bubbles can be seen rising below, and perhaps the carbonation level has something to do with it as it's continually being added to. As of now it's still got a full surface covering. It's dropped to a very thin layer but it's still solid, and there's a heavier amount along the sides of the glass. The aroma suggests tartness, Granny Smith apples, and dried apricots. There's some acetaldehyde, but that's to be expected if it smells so much like Granny Smiths. Where is the barrel though? It might be there and I'm just not finding it because it's being blocked out. Perhaps once it warms. Whoah! The flavor is quite tart. It's bright and alive and very much like a Granny Smith apple (that's Maria Ann Smith to those in the know!). It's light-medium in body and gently crisp and effervescent, but with an acidy that you can feel as it hits the back of your throat. I thought the carbonation was higher but I guess not, although the head remains, still with a very thin but solid surface covering, and with some nice creamy lace along the rim and up the side of the glass. This is probably the best looking sour beer I've ever seen. Back to the flavor, I am finding some oak. It's mainly in the finish although there's a little bit throughout. I don't find the alcohol at 8.8% ABV, but there is a light presence to it - you know that you're not drinking a 3 or 4% beer, but it's not as clear as if you were drinking a double IPA. Hmmm, perhaps the alcohol is lending to the biting finish as well. Wow, the lace is creamy and solid, and now rises two-fingers thick above the surface - at least it's got that going for it. Beyond that, although it's a good sour, it's kind of one or two sided. Ahh, I'll even call it three as there is some oak there, but something just a little bit more would push it over the line into greatness whereas now it's just very very good. Still, it's another fantastic beer from Hermit Thrush, and I'm definitely going to seek out more of this. I'd imagine that it'd make a great beer to have with a Thanksgiving Day feast as it would cut through all of the fats and cleans the palate while still offering a light touch of sweetness, and the flavor of apples that would go with the season. Certainly recommended!

On-tap 11/27/2016 at Natty Greene’s Tavern in North Attleboro, MA, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wild Belgian yeast, citrus, caramelized malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a nice burst of sourness from wild Belgian yeast and tart citrus. Then a hearty but not too heavy malt character comes in. There is some background sweetness from caramel and spice that brings a good balance. The after-taste is sour.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down dangerously easy, not too filling, good kick, good variation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while.
