Literally every ingredient, including lactose and yeast, is from within 40 miles of our brewery. Valley Malt barley, Four Star wheat and hops, Brattleboro water, lactobacillus and mixed culture yeast.

Hermit Thrush Brewery "40 Mile Fun Zone"
1 pint can
$5.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Great label design, and it's a completely local beer! I'm not from Vermont but I can appreciate buying local. That's at the very least better for the environment because there's less transportation of materials. OK... it's poured a very hazy golden body beneath a massive head of loose white foam. That'll settle down once I get the second half of it poured... and now it's a one inch cap of rocky foam. The aroma displays acidity and fruitiness. It's like a really sharp, partially rotten apple. The flavor displays the same acidity and apple along with some citrus pith, chalkiness from the lactose, lime, and grassy and earthy hops. It finishes quite dry despite having only a moderate bitterness. In the mouth it's acidic, sharp, and light-medium or perhaps medium-light in body with a gently effervescent carbonation. The head held up pretty well and actually left some very nice lacing at the outset, but eventually it dropped as all sour beers do - even ones with lactose in them. In the end I've had better beers from Hermit Thrush but this is simply kettle soured so that makes sense. For fans of sour beers I'd say it's worth trying.

Way to much lactic acid, really off putting pickly brine flavor. Can smell it too. Worst Hermit Thrush beer I’ve tried

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that left a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sourness are present in the nose along with a bit of funk.
T: The taste follows the smell and is somewhat sour with a bit of barnyard funk with slight hints of limes.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't nearly as sour as some of the others made by this brewery, but it's nice to see that it is entirely made with locally sourced ingredients.

Poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice chill hazy burnt dark yellow color almost a little bit of orange. Nice thicker than normal Hermit Thrush cap of a little white foamy head. However, it did fall off like the norm of a HT beer. Light sticky lace, really sporadic.
The aroma had fresh green apples; sour, tart and sweet following a fresh lemon rind and light grassy hops.
The flavor provided a keen sour to tart green apple to lemony fresh sour character with gentle grassy notes. Light sticky sour green apple notes and lemon.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Good carbonation and ABV. Brisk finish of green apples, grassiness and lemon.
Overall, quite a nice pale sour ale. Definitely one to revisit during warmer weather.
