What is it and why should you care?
"A special 5th Anniversary project, this barrel aged sour golden ale is a select blend of golden ales aged in red and white wine barrels, which was then Double Dry Hopped after blending [with local hops from Four Star Farms.]" Production time, 18 months.
Look:
Clear, deep gold, twinge of bronze
Nose:
Opens up Bretty and tropical, but not sunshine tropical. Old Kiwi, farmy pineapple, floral peach. A little footy, but nothing unexpected from dry hopped mixed culture. Tons of green apple both the skins, and 'slices sitting on the counter.' Soft grain/hay, and maybe some river rocks if you don't shove your nose in there. Definite bit of VA, which initially was passenger to minty/pine tones, but became more cranberry acetic with time.
Palate:
Tons of wine barrel and house bacteria qualities. Complex acidity, green apple tannin, bolstered by perfect mid palate texture. Peach mostarda. Glad its not higher carb, it would uncomfortably get up the nostrils. Finish lingers back in the uvula, more of the acetic quality. Almost as assertive and spontaneous as their cuvee series. Packs a punch.
Conclusion:
This is a complex beer that you will need to spend time with. Both to tease out the nuance, and to curb the heartburn. It's too acetic for me but that's how I feel about most HT brews, some food would help, anything that needs mustard.
