Canned 1/20/22
Rye is not something you often see in Wild Ales, but I’m glad Hermit Thrush decided to do so. It seems like a great idea in theory, with the slightly spicy notes playing well with the funkier ones, but let’s see if the execution can live up to this
Pours an opaque orange gold with a finger of soapy off white head that quickly fades to a thin ring and leaves decent lacing
There’s definitely a lot of funk in the nose, but the rye is a bit subdued. I’m picking up on aromas of wildflower honey, smooth oaj, tannic white wine, stone, bready malt, rye, lemon zest, apple cider vinegar, and a touch of tobacco
The rye is definitely more forward in taste, but it’s an even trade as it backs off the funk a bit. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting lemon juice, rye bread, sharp oak, wet hay, biscuity malt, tannic white wine, apple skin, and light honey. The swallow brings notes of rye bread, black pepper, lemon zest, bready malt, wet hay, sharp oak, apple cider vinegar, light coriander, and stone
A medium body pairs with moderate carbonation, resulting in a sharp beer. Finishes a tad sticky but dries out over time
This one is probably a bit past its prime, but it’s still damn good regardless
