Got this one from the Bierkoning in Amsterdam

From a 375ml bottle into a snifter
Vintage: 2017
Batch III
Aged in 12 year bourbon barrels

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a two finger, medium looking, fizzy and crackly tan head with good retention. Black body with some carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, creamy cap. Half wisp remains leaving some decent lacing on the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Definitely some tart cherry on this one. Wood, milk chocolate and vanilla aromas come through as well.

TASTE: Bourbon, spirit, with some wood and vanilla up front. More spirit at the swallow, with clearly some woody and bourbon character in the finish. This seems less bourbon barrel aged and more straight bourbon infused. Medium and lingering finish of wood, spirit, some vanilla and milk chocolate, with hints of toffee sweetness. A hint of tart cherry is there too.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Spirit lingers.

OVERALL: There’s very little imperial stout on this one. The label advertises the base beer as including dark chocolate and coffee flavors, but that’s completely missing. The bourbon barrel has also just imparted spirit and alcohol flavors to the beer, like it was infused with a bottle of Jack Daniels straight up. Can’t really hang with the better examples of the style. Strangely enough, I would guess the base beer is probably pretty solid on its own, but the barrel addition doesn’t really work here. Not off-putting but below par for the style.
