I sampled a draft of this brew at the brewery and decided to get a 32 oz growler of it. Finally opening this now, as its been n my beer fridge since late December. Lets see how it held up.
top opens with a bit of a fizz and the beer is just about to the top of the growler, good fill!
Beer pours a clear chestnut hue with a bit of a cherry red highlight when I hold up my glass to a light source.
A fizzy khaki colored head goes up 1 cm and fades to a sturdy edge layer and one large wispy island.
The aroma is sweet and malty with caramel and brown sugar and a bit of dark fruit, raisin and plum. I also think some red grape. Seems to have a lot going on and is all malt. Hops are absent on the nose and the ABV is well hidden too.
First sip reveals a medium body with smooth texture that is a little more watery than I had hoped. Carbonation is mild and fairly spacious. The beer does coat my palate after each sip with some sweet dark fruit.
Flavor is malty through and through. I get caramel and toffee with brown sugar and dark fruit again. Plums, raisin, and red grape, again no hop character showing here. Booze is well hidden for 9% and this growler is emptying pretty fast. Good thing its a weekend!
Another pretty good beer from MooDuck. Glad I can visit pretty easily when I am in the area. I would definitely get this again, especially good if you like sweeter and maltier versions of the style, which is appropriate for an English Barleywine. Well done.
