American Wild Ale Aged in Oak with Blueberries

Our 5th collaboration with Allagash Brewery, Consider the Opposite captures the essence of the Maine landscape and the formative tradition of wild farmhouse brewing.

Brewed entirely with Maine-grown ingredients and fermented with Maine air. For real - the same air that ferments Allagash's legendary spontaneous coolship beers. We laid this beer to rest in wine barrels, aged it in oak for six months, then racked it onto wild blueberries.

Slow-conditioned in the bottle, this beer is a love letter written to Allagash's craft and respect for tradition. We pored over each word, like a suitor in a Jane Austen novel armed with fresh ink and a fountain pen. The beer pours an alluring light purple and is low acidity with big notes of blueberry jam and blueberry wine. Pairs well with a funky, flavorful cheese.

Bottle from the brewery in Brooklyn. Pours a clear dark ruby red with a finger of light pink foamy head, nice lacing, smell is jammy tannic red wine, blueberry skin, sour blueberry jam, red current/pomegranate juice/hard candy, taste follows the nose with tart jammy red wine, blueberry soda, blueberry pie filling, and pomegranate/cherry/red current juice/hard candy, hints of oak and grassy funk, feel is light and bright with assertive acidity, finishes dry. Blueberries and red wine make a delicious, jammy, berry forward, bright tart treat! Yum!

Purple color. Nice, pink head.Barnyard, blueberries, and wine in the aroma. Moderate sourness in wine-like taste. Nice collaboration, but I doubt it will ever be brewed again.

Had both batch 1 & 2, might have preferred #1. Reviewing #2 because I'm down to my last of the former. Bottle delivery by 3s. Short tumbler @home.

Oude bruin sort of color, with a splash of purple, lingering pale pink foam; clear.

Smell is obviously sour, sharp & seriously tannic(grape skin).

I take back my opinion on batch 1 vs 2, as it's probably just inconsistent. This is again a mellower sour, fruit forward with dark & rich dried blueberry/concord/shiraz-y grape flavor. Wine-like acidity that lingers. Steel-y, green/stem bitterness, hints of beneficial oxidation & even some vanilla if you wait in between sips.

Smooth on the tongue but ending dry. Moderate to boozy, but warm. I've had richer fruit beers, but this is not on the low end either. Textured & not bluntly bashing me over the head with Sourhead candy. It drinks very much like a bottle of softly oaked wine.

Very good.
