In November 2019, our head brewer traveled to the Czech Republic for pilsner, but returned home and couldn't stop thinking about Czech dark lager.
Indelible. A wink to what we consider a historic and important style just starting to get its due in the craft world. Known as Tmavé Pivo, this beer showcases roasty malt complexity in a way that's creamy, highly drinkable and low ABV. This release completes our Czech lager trifecta (Yore and Lifeworld round out the trio).
Where Volition (our German style Black Lager) is dry and drinkable with slight dark German pretzel roast notes, Indelible leans towards rich chocolate, bearing full flavor, creamy, smooth texture and finishing at just 4.4%. If you enjoyed Precipice, our collaboration with Schilling Beer Co., you should definitely pick this one up.
As with Yore and Lifeworld, Indelible is brewed with 100% Czech ingredients and is largely differentiated from the German lagers in our lineup by the Czech lager yeast used in fermentation (German yeast results in drier, crisper beers; Czech yeast, richer and fuller ones).

Mostly opaque super dark brown with a tan head. Fresh soil and leather as a base for cocoa, tobacco, roasted malt and faint raisin in nose. Taste is simpler with the roasted malt and Baker’s chocolate, vague, earthy tones round out. Feel is decently dry with roast and malt tones both obvious, lighter body than expected, shallower

Dark, brown color. Medium-sized, off-white head. Toasted caramel, grain, and herbal hops in the aroma. Malty taste with balancing hoppy/roasted bitterness.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 11/28/23.
Appearance: rich dark amber-brown hue with no haze and a thick finger of frothy tan foam atop. Looks good.
Smell: quite yeasty with a nice dose of caramel, alongside a hint of biscuit aroma. A nicely nuanced character.
Taste: toasty, nutty, a little bit caramelly, and a little bit biscuity. Kind of like a brown ale, but a lager. There’s a nice bracing bitterness as well, which rounds the flavor out nicely.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and creaminess.
Overall: a super drinkable dark lager. A really good level of flavor for a 4.4% beer!

This is my first Czech lager. I will refer to the style guidelines to help me navigate this review. Using a Sidel, I served it at 44 degrees. The pour created a frothy and creamy light tan two-fingered head with excellent retention. A slow dissipation left chunks of lacing on the glass. Charting the color somewhere near SRM 24, a ruby brown with garnet hues. The clarity is clear with effervescent visibility. The overall appearance of the beer is above average, close to excellent.
Nosing the glass, I detect nuts, cola, caramel, mild coffee, light chocolate, raisins, toasted bread crust, and floral esters.
The flavors closely align with the aromas. I taste toasted pumpernickel, nuttiness, caramel, light coffee, a hint of earthiness, floral esters, raisins, prunes, and a touch of Maillard.
The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. The body is medium, has medium carbonation, and has a soft lingering finish.
This is a tasty brew. The style aligns nearly perfectly with the guidelines. There is not much to complain about. I would have liked just a bit more depth in the body. Overall, I would not mind a couple of cases in my fridge going into the summer months.

Pours a dark brown color, completely opaque. Thick two to three finger velvety tan head. Head dissolves until just a thin layer of tan velvet remains on the top of the beer.
Aroma has lovely notes of dark bready malts, a touch of creaminess, chocolate, a hint of light spiciness.
Taste follows the nose with notes of dark malts, a bit of grainy notes, some chocolate, some rye bread, some pumpernickel, giving way to a lightly spicy, grassy hop finish.
Feel is light to medium bodied. Smooth, easy drinking and a bit creamy. Moderate carbonation.
Overall a really well done, tasty Czech dark lager. If that graininess was not there in the flavor profile this would be stellar.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with notes of chocolate and hints of roasted malts.
T: The taste is nearly a mirror image of the smell and has a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This lager is incredibly tasty for a beer that is only 4.4% abv. It is perfectly sessionable and makes for a good selection if you are looking for something that has lots of aromas and flavors of dark malts.

An excellent example of an underappreciated style, in my book. Pours with a full finger of head, moderate lacing. Cocoa powder, dark roasted earthiness, light floral hop character, and a tiny hint of smoke on the nose. Nicely complex.

16 ounce can, canned on 03/09/21. Served in a dimpled mug, the beer pours dark brown with about a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. I like the aroma a lot, the brew smells like bready and roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, nuts and dark fruit. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some herbal/earthy flavors noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's smooth, a bit slick and creamy with a good amount of carbonation. Pretty easy to drink! Overall I liked this brew, good enjoyable Czech style dark lager!
