A style we've only made once before, Altbiers are Kölsch's stylistic spirit animal. Flavor-forward, yet relaxed, My Preferred Apocalypse has an herbaceous hop character (hello, German Hersbrucker & Perle), and a finish reminiscent of Angostura and tobacco leaf.

Canned 3/9

I can't really tell what it looks like cuz it's dark and I'm not flippin the light switch. Not for you geeks. If I hold it to the screen it looks brownish? With a big 'ol head. 18 stars! Smells kinda soapy, but that might could be on me. Maybe I ain't rinse this glass too fuckin' well. Who knows? It's vaguely malty. Bready. I dunno. I ain't no super smeller. I mouth it and it's way more bitter than implied by the nose. Almost medicinal in an "I'm too impatient for these gizmos to kick in naturally, so I'm just gonna chew 'em up" kinda way. Too bitter for me. And it doesn't seem to be a hop thing, though I'm sure that plays a part. I know I had one of these a month or two ago and don't remember disliking it, so maybe age is playing a role? Dunno.

Creamy, leggy froth over russet; boule crust yeast tang, autumn leaf, tea, + pepper on the nose; country rye loaf, dark caramel, hazelnuts, candy apple, spice, poached pear, peppery hops; smooth, clean, bitter.

Smells like a currant bun, tastes like a pretzel.
There’s plenty going on - hints of black cherry esters, heaps of melanoidins. Has all of the right alt notes, though maybe not in the right proportions: it's almost too characterful.
Big flavours hurt the lagered sessionability, and push this towards ESB or Brown Ale territory.
Gets the Teutonic quality, just needs the restraint.

Double altbier?
I want to want to drink more than one, but I don’t.
