Sexy Betty - Brandy Barrel AgedSexy Betty - Brandy Barrel Aged
Notes: A sweet nose greets the adventurous in this marriage of our Black Betty Russian Imperial Stout and a 6-month aging in 50 year old American brandy barrels. From the Black Betty base, rich chocolate aromatics play delightfully against a coffee-like impression. An elegantly pleasant surprise wakes the palate, which migrates from a hint of brandy into a wonderfully lingering roasted malt character.

Pours from the bomber a deep, dark brown with a big tan head that persists and lots of carbonation.
Aroma is chocolate, plum, roast coffee, molasses.
Chocolate is up front on the taste with plummy dark fruit. Roast and char with a bittering and fruity finish.
Mouthfeel is medium and smooth.

Pours black with two fingers of khaki foam after softly pouring straight into the glass. Head retention is superb with fair lacing. Aroma is huge notes of roasted and toasted malts right up front. They carry a little bitterness. Brandy, cherries, and barrel show up next. Brandy compromises about 90% of the aroma. It's a touch boozy, but not overly so. Flavor profile is smooth notes of toasted, roasted, and nutted malts with an earthy finish. Brandy is apparent throughout the flavor profile, but leaves a lingering, semi-boozy taste on the tongue. Heavy malts carry a bitter power. Charred barrel shows up as well towards the end. Mouth feel is thick, with a filling, hearty texture. It's not velvety, nor creamy, just thick. Overall, a mighty powerful stout. It's aroma and flavor profile would suggest a higher ABV.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 750mL bottle.

On tap at Bru in Philly, pours pitch black color with a 1 finger creamy tan colored head that faded slowly and left excellent foamy lacing coating the sides as it receded.

Smells of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee grinds, molasses, brown sugar, faint piney hops, fudge, dark fruit and chocolate syrup. Sweet by not cloyingly sweet, it's pretty bold and in your face yet maintains a nice level of balance.

Tastes of brandy, dark fruit, caramel, toffee, soy sauce, brown sugar, maple syrup, candied sugar, raisins, plum, candy, licorice, charred wood, and black cherry cola. The ashy roasted notes tame the sweetness. Nice level of bitterness and sweetness, it goes down easy and hides the ABV well.

L: Pours dark brown with a thick creamy brown head that last forever (like a Saison).
S: Wonderful sweet aroma with a strong brandy smell.
T: First taste that hits you is the sweet taste of brandy. That is followed by a chocolate with a little bitterness. It's a wondeful balance of flavors and is wonderful Imperial Stout
F: Smooth with a bit of bitterness but with lots of flavors.
O: Very nice Imperail Stout and you definelty get the Brandy. Very happy with this beer

Appearance: Pours like a Belgian stout, with a billowy three fingers of beige foam topping the fudge colored liquid; the retention was so strong there was hardly an ability to check the lacing

Smell: The warmer the beer gets, the more the Brandy tones dominate the aroma, with their fortified grape character; underneath I sense chocolate, blueberry and, to a lesser extent, caramel

Taste: Chocolate, blueberry and coffee tones forward, with caramel adding a layer, underneath; roasty and slightly hoppy, through the middle with the Brandy barrel building; more Brandy and some roast in the finish

Mouthfeel: As the appearance forewarned, the beer has a Belgain stout mouthfeel, with a buoyant carbonation masking the full body

Overall: I was hesitant to buy this bottle, given the rating and the price, but I am glad I pulled the trigger as the beer has a lot going for it; I like the mouthfeel as well as the blueberry impact; the Brandy barrel really adds a nice dimension here

Had this one a few times, but have not gotten around to rating it. I remember having it for the first time and being quite impressed. Needless to say, I am still, quite impressed.

Looks great! Pours a deep black shade with a dark tan head that is thin and even, lasts a while and then does not quite go away. Hangs sleepily around the edges. and atop the beer.

The smell is quite nice. Lots of char and and a really sharp, bright boozey grape sort of smell. Surprisingly a bit tart and sweet smelling. You get some cherry notes as well with a bit of dark chocolate, hint of vanilla, and light roasted coffee.

Taste is quite nice! A sweeter stout in my opinion but perfectly off-balanced by the bitterness of the charred wood tones and the hops that come in at the end. I definitely get the brandy barrel. It is not in your face but lends nicely to the beer. It is a bit boozey that gives the beer an almost spice note with all the subtle tones of dark chocolate and sweetened black coffee going on. The grape tone of the brandy is well integrated.

The mouthfeel is perfect and a bit deceiving. At first I thought it was a pretty damn thick beer. But then I realized upon the second sip that some of the thickness was really do to the very fine carbonation. The body overall is just pretty fantastic. A bit smooth. A bit heated with the alcohol. But it my opinion, very good. It all comes together so nicely.

My bottle is about a year old. I can easily see the further aging potential in it. I think I am a bit more of a fan of the Black Betty but I am a sucker for bourbon and beer together. The Sexy Betty certainly has it's place though. It's a good stout when you want something a bit more mellow, but still bountiful with flavor.

A thin tan head towers above this jet black brew, slowly breaking apart, and leaving thick lines of lace behind. Has a strong aroma involving black licorice, milk chocolate, brown bread, cherry, currants, faint oak and even unexpected notes of peppercorn. Superbly complex and so promising. Tastes sweet and smooth up front with plenty of milk chocolate, black grape and cherry that are quickly followed by palpable notes of pine and charred wood. A hint of vanilla and brandy booze is noticed in the background. Medium to heavy in body. The alcohol heat is almost lost in the mix of other flavors, but does peek out from time to time.

I'm not sure how sexy this burly Betty is, but with lots of character and flavor she sure will keep you warm and your tummy full, and there's really no wishing for much better than that.

Great looking brew, nice tan head and lacing on top of deep, black body.

Aroma has hints of fruit and sweet boozy notes with the roster malts.

Taste is nice too, it's well done but lacking some wow. Probably loses most for feel, finished really dry and quick.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a finger high dense tan head that died down but consistently left a short head covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark chocolate malts and bits of roast are present in the nose along with notes of brandy, the latter of which becomes a little stronger as the beer warms up. Some hints of licorice are also perceptible.
T: The taste has flavors of dark malts and bits of chocolate with notes of brandy from the barrel aging.
M: It feels full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount carbonation.
O: This beer tastes first and foremost like a stout because the brandy isn't too strong, but rather accentuates the taste. It also is rather drinkable considering the strength because it does a very good job at hiding its alcohol.
