Deep orange color, with golden edges. Not too much foam, white, quite creamy.
Smell: spicy. A lot. A bit of maltiness background. Maybe coriander. Orange peel, bitter and sweet. Maybe sage, but still something balsamic, fresh. Quite inviting smell. Fennel? Anyway, interesting and intriguing.
Same for the taste, pleasant, fresh and inviting.
Even cereal notes. A good beer, in the end.
The alcohol (9 ABV) is well hidden.
In the aftertaste again, a spicy feast.

Presentation: Picked up this bottle during a Brewery Tour of the Brasserie Brootcoorens on Monday 17th April, 2006.
Colorful label has the picture of a blue bunny girl sat next to a frothing goblet of beer with the word Désir above both. Described below this picture as Bière naturelle aux 9 Epices. Recette Spéciale Pur Malt, Non Filtrée. Listed as 9% Alc. Vol. Has Freshness tabs but they are un-clicked.
Appearance: Clear golden orange with a hay infested brassy hue. Soft off-white head rings the top compartment and stays around throughout. Lots of streamers in my tall Maredsous glass. Sexy looks no doubt.
Nose: Spicy hops with a garden infested centre-piece which includes gnome infused grass cuttings and a yeast strained grainy nose that has a cigarette butt smell to it. More hops and spices reign throughout but that annoying grainy bit pervades and spoils things I feel. Dry bitterness rescinds in the finish.
Taste: The start has ..lots of Kent Goldings; so I think, but the Englishness in this one is so dominant as to be hard to miss. Spicy hop character is soft but the finish has a grainy dank bitterness that is sharp funky and not kind to the subtleties of Belgium. The harsh grain bitterness is off-putting a little but somehow I can live with it, though I am sure others may not.
Mouthfeel: The infused soft carbonation proceeds to display a grainy protraction that contributes to the taste profile but then detracts from it. Im not that taken with the grainy part but the spices help to pull off a marvel that has plenty of balls. Way above average, with no discernable alcohol, but a big feel nonetheless.
Drinkability: The bitterness and grainy dollop in the backend distracts but bugger me with an old bristled toilet brush sideways if it isnt very drinkable nonetheless!
Overall: A lovely treat to concentrate on, this is one that I got to sample at the Brewery but it tasted better there than at home for some reason. So this bottle that I lugged all the way home to the US was a first in a way. Despite that annoying grainy apect its a damned good drinking beer.
