A - A nice, two finger cap of dense, white foam on top of a very hazy, dark golden colored body. The head settles very slowly and leaves nice, thick lace.
S - Lots of spicy, peppery hops with a touch of pine. Some grainy malt in the background.
T - Sweet malt up front and an intense wave of spicy hops. Musty hop notes in the middle with a bit of honey malt flavor and some light acidity. The beer finishes with moderate bitterness and more of the earthy euro hop flavors that have been present throughout as well as a lingering pine note.
M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a fairly dry finish.
D - This is an unusually good example of the style. Imperial pilsners rarely do anything for me and most of them are really pretty awful. This, much like Sam Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner, is a rare exception. Instead of being a syrupy mess, it has a light malt body that is fleshes out by loads of flavorful German hops. Huge notes of musty hop spice and a touch of pine make for a very drinkable beer; and while the bitterness is significant enough to balance the sugar and alcohol, it is not harsh or overwhelming. This is one of the best beers that I have had form seven bridges and hopefully is will make another seasonal appearance some time in the future.
