Growler filled on 3/12/16, poured on 3/18/16.
Look: Slightly darker than the average Steady Habit brew: light copper and only slightly hazy. Not much head here, but the translucency is nice. I'm sure the bros would pop a bonafide semi to this one. ;) I love that SHBC can brew turbid fruit bombs as well as straightforward, well-executed and balanced IPAs. But I think I'm getting ahead of myself here...
Smell: Honeydew, backed by a bit of grapefruit and orange rind. Nothing crazy, but what's here is quite inviting.
Taste: HUELL MELON!!! I'd recognize that honeydew goodness anywhere. Honeydew dominates here, with a hint of orange rind, backed with a little malt. Perhaps there's a bit of Mandarina Bavaria here too? This reminds me a lot of Techno Viking, but this time the emphasis here is on Huell Melon instead of the Mandarina Barvaria. Very nice combo though. The finish is all bitter orange rind.
Feel: Perfect SHBC mouthfeel here. Medium bodied, prickly, dry, long bitter finish. What's not to love?
Overall: I really love this! I love that it's not flashy, nor is it following the latest tropical fruit bomb trend. This is a bitter IPA, a throwback to Stone/Green Flash/etc. I personally LOVE unapologeticly bitter IPAs, and this certainly delivers on that without being one-dimensional.. Juice bombs are tasty, don't get me wrong (and SHBC cranks those out like the best of 'em), but I personally need a nice bitter backbone to contrast against that fruit. This beer absolutely delivers on that aspect .
Thanks Jon, I hope you name this one and put it into the regular rotation, though I'm sure Huell Melon is a real bitch to source in large enough quantities.
