i really like the idea of a session scottish ale. its a style i really like, but when they average around 8% abv, its hard to drink as much of it as i like to without being a mess. this solves that problem, built with all the grain layers and depth of a traditional scottish ale, but at a much lower abv, im not even sure this one hits 5%, so its an all day session, perfect this time of year. more red than i am used to in color, and indeed perhaps more amber caramel malts in it than the darker more toasty grains of the style, but it has the right sugar content, the right hint of smoke, and the right warming property throughout. i dont know what yeast they used, but its successful for sure, adding a velvety roundness and richness to a beer thats this light is not easy to do. it doesnt feel light, which i think is why i like it so much. its smooth and fuller, and it lingers in the finish. a nice wrinkle in a traditional style that respects the original, but makes it more approachable and entirely unique. the recent beers coming out of grandmas house are much improved...
