they took a pretty solid base scottish ale and spiced the heck out of it. i am all in favor of doing seasonal variations of stuff, especially a beer like this that seems built for flavor additions, but they went way over the top with this one, and its hard to drink a whole pint unless you like them incredibly spiced. for us it felt like a lot. amber colored beer a little light for the style and a little still from the tap, but nice clarity and shine. the aroma is heavy ginger and clove, with some almost caribbean feeling allspice to it as well, like its actually spice, like i may be allergic to it or something. some cinnamon and brown sugar notes in there as well, and in a smaller proportion, it would be appealing for sure. the ginger doesnt taste fresh to me, rather dried and powdered, and definitely overdosed along with the clove, this is almost bitter at the end from all the spice, but there is enough malt sweetness backing it up that it still has some roundness to it. i wish the spices were toned down a bit as i think this combination of them with the base beer has a lot of potential, but this is an order of magnitude overdone...
