a basic but tasty red ale, which seems to be a popular style among the costa rican craft brewers. the label art on this one is awesome, and it seems to be better made than their number 7 golden ale. its got a nice earthy kilned malt red vibe, not as sweet and caramelized tasting as so many of these are, and with a little bit of a hop note to finish. its fresh baked in a way, and with some body too, i like the simple but clean nature of this, and the high carbonation really helps it stay refreshing for a malt forward beer. from a technical standpoint, this was probably the best of the beers we had from these guys on our trip, as they in general seemed to do more fruited beers, kind of cheaper tasting and looking overall, but this is a very solid red, better than many others we had in costa rica. nice as a food beer too because the body is light enough to not be filling and its flavorful enough to be complimentary to a variety of dishes. i had it with shrimp and rice, and it was a fine fit. hard to get overly stoked on a simple red ale, but this is a good one.

This seems to be one of the more common micro brews to find in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica (meaning that I've seen it maybe twice, in a part of the world that has nearly zero micro offerings). I obtained a 350mL single for 1490 CR colones (~ US $2.80) at the Auto Mercado supermarket in Tamarindo. ABV is 5.5% according to the label.

Clear copper brew turns a lovely candy apple red when held to the sun. A gentle pour generates 1/2" of light tan foam which settles after a minute but retains a nice thick layer on the surface with some decent lacing after each sip. A great looking brew.

Smell is fairly sweet with dense lighter malt sugars and light caramel, like the shell of of a candied apple. A slight generic hop bitterness also in the nose. Taste is... hmm, completely different from the smell, not at all what I was expecting. Dry, slightly malty, moderate amount of generic hop bitterness, and a slightly sour twang lingering long into the finish. Body has a slight weight to it, with a gentle but rigorous carbonation, appropriate for the style.

Very odd to have such a stark disconnect between the smell and the taste, loses major points for that. I would like it a lot more if the flavor had a bit of sweetness to it.
