Got this one as a freebee from the Duvel guy down the road from the old place.
From a bottle into a snifter
Steam beer aged on cacao nibs
APPEARANCE: Pours a 1+ finger, medium looking, creamy, off-white head with good retention. Slightly hazy burnt umber with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a half-wisp. A ring remains until the end but leaves no real lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Pale malts, light caramel, grassy and floral notes with light melon aromas. Bolder nose with some mute cacao hints coming through as the beer warms.
TASTE: Pale malts, grassy hops, spicy notes and some melon sweetness. A spicy finish is grassy with a bit of sweet melon. Flavorful but no real cacao presence besides perhaps a touch of it at the swallow. I might be making this up though.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes a bit dry. Some spicy notes linger.
OVERALL: Good stuff. The cacao nibs are really mute here, but that's fine for what it is. A strong cacao presence would probably clash pretty badly. All in all, an interesting twist and a well made beer.
