Labeled as an English Strong Pale Ale (whatever that is), this 600 ml bottle of beer came from my friend Tomas. Although it has been three months since I saw him, I still give many thanks to him for this. On to the beer:
That head has a fizzy character on top, forming decently, but fading away very quickly. Its body is hazy, toasted orange in color. I smelled the beer and did not expect what I got; it smells closer to a smoked beer made in Bamberg than a classic English ale. It has a strong smoked meat smell, carrying mild butterscotch and diacetyl notes. Apple vinegar maybe? Whatever, this smells attractive.
The taste brings more pleasure than pain, although the few few sips are odd because on one hand, you have a strong rauchbier-like taste, but on the other, is labeled as an English Strong Pale Ale. It tastes like a meld of the two styles, with modest caramel teaming up with smoked meat. It's a light bodied beer, featuring carbonation which has a fizzy character. While it does score points for being more attractive than gross, Kings & Queens isn't a beer that I'd have more than a pint of at a sitting.
