Dark Something from Winding Path Brew Co. Purchased at Franklin Beer (Franklin, PA) 11/03/25. 16 fl oz can, $ 3.25 (Including tax)/ $ 0.203 fl oz. Reviewed 08/04/25 (Review 3497). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Printed on can bottom “CANNED ON 10/07/24.” Stored in reefer at distributor and at 39 degrees F at home: served at 49.6 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 55.2 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.25
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, translucent ruby.
Head – Large (Maximum 3.1cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, high density, average retention. Drops to a 0.8 cm crown and cap.
Lacing – Poor. A few medium-sized islands of foam hang on the sides of the glass.
Aroma – 3 – Toasted malt and some cloying, artificial-smelling, sweetness. No hops, no yeast, no alcohol.
Flavor – 3 – Begins mildly sweet, with toasted malt. No yeast, no hops. No alcohol (7 % ABV, according to the label). No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming. Ends sour.
Palate – 3 – Medium: creamy: lively carbonation – everything a stout’s palate should be, and no more…
Style: Kind of follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.

Final impression and summation: 3.25 Not even the beautiful ruby glow could save this from the drain, with my apologies to the drain.

Poured into a mason jar: color is solid black, head presents quickly with a light tan color with scan quarter inch presentation, head dissipates to nothing and no lacing.

Smell is light roasted malt, hint of toast and base malt, earthy and grassy hops, with warmth some subtle dark fruit - really clean and enticing aroma.

Taste is more light roasted malt, some coffee notes, light toast, light base malt, some oats and light earthy malts.

Mouthfeel is low/moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, lower bitterness for the style.

Overall a very solid malt bill but the hops are light and limited, its not overly sweet just not much bitterness; ABV is hidden well.
