very interesting brew here, an italian producer whom i had never heard of before this one, taking a stab at a german style of old, and executing it very well. this, for all i really know, could have been made in germany, there is nothing about it thats anything like what we have come to expect from the italians, which i suppose is what we should expect from them, the unexpected... anyhow, this is a marzen lager, and its a good one. big and rich on the malt, a little stronger than a lot of the german ones, and with a really nice weight and body to it. look like liquid brown sugar, caramel swirling with the deepest copper colored malts, under over an inch of shaving cream thick tan frothy head. it smells traditional, the sweet malts and the lager yeast, notes of fresh baked bran muffin, honey butter, and toast. lots of caramelization of the grain sugar, not much hops, and a long finish for the style. its somewhat richer and bolder than what i am used to in the style, but i think all the elements come together really well. artfully done, seemingly modernized version of a classic style, i liked this a whole lot.

This is a beer with big malty flavors, some caramel hints, and a dry finish. It has the doppelbock malt but not all of the nuances and complexities. Its moderately low hops are typical for the style but it could use more for balance and to add depth.
