64oz Growler

A big shout out goes to emerge077 for bringing this treat over to d0b's place last Saturday, thanks Matt! B.A.M. is a tarnished copper IPA with bright orange highlights when backlit. The barrel doesn't look like it added much color to the body, surprisingly. A dirty white head raises a couple fingers on each pour and fades rather quickly to a thick cap leaving behind spotty lacing on its way. The glowing body when backlit makes my mouth water.

The nose on this barrel aged IPA is amazing! It changes every time my beak jams in the glass. A hint of vanilla and oak cradle a bursting fruity sweetness that mostly shows off all aspects of the orange from peel to pith to meat with the peel being candied. A solid malt base of both caramel and toffee set this one up to be a doozy. As it warms the fruit evolves to multiple varieties of citrus and takes hold. More evolution takes place and the fruitiness fades while sandalwood (thanks Matt) becomes the main aspect. Wow!

I won't be as long winded as I was with the nose because basically, it was spot on. Super fruity, mild oak and vanilla, and a faint, faint hint at bourbon round this out into an insanely unique and well received IPA. The finish is dry and brings out both the hopping and barrel aging nicely. This is simply an outstanding, unique IPA.

The carbonation is soft and pushes the moderate body through at a mellow pace that nearly perfectly matches the overall beer. I was told the tap version had a bit more carbonation but I actually think the lower level could hardly be improved upon. The finish is dry and brings out some soft bitterness.

Drinkability? Well, it's off the charts. I would have had a hard time putting this beer down had there not been other people present at the moment. This is worth a trip to Villa Park alone.

B.A.M . is one of the best IPAs I've come across in a while. It's unique, delicious, and dangerously drinkable. The second use Heaven Hill barrel worked perfectly for this IPA which only allowed a hint of bourbon to come through. Thanks for the treat Matt, my mouth is watering again after writing this review!

(B.)arrel (A.)ged (M.)oondance

This was listed at 6.2% at the pub, but they said it topped out a bit higher. "Moondance IPA aged in last year's double award winning BBL-aged Batch 500's Heaven Hill bourbon barrel".

Review from notes. Reddish orange, languidly rising carb trails on a steady upward thrust. Woody, fruity bourbon barrel sweetness in the nose with a light tangerine citrus. Initial fleeting taste of tangerine or cantaloupe, with a firm residual hop bitterness mingling with dry oak traces. Resiny. The symbiosis of the barrel and hop character was flat out masterful, no hint of the booze while still showcasing the citrusy hops that make Moondance great. It had soft mellow feel from the growler, but did retain some of the carbonation that it had on tap from the source. It's best asset has to be the extreme drinkability for the style, not many barrel-aged beers you can say that about...
