on nitro-tap at the brewpub in suburban Chicago. pours black with a half finger of thick, creamy tan head that produces a razor-thin line on top of the beer. moderate lacings and great retention. looks great in the glass.
aroma is full of toffee and a bit of coffee, with a bunch of flavors mixed together nicely. vanilla and roasted malts are present as well, along with a subtle sweetness coupled with a fruit-like infused character. very rich in the nose with a Bailey's Irish Cream-like character from the toffee and vanilla, along with a nutty quality in the background that really accentuates the richness.
taste is a bit thin overall when compared to the aroma, with notes of roasted malt and a distant sweet, fruit-like character that finishes a bit sour. on the palate the brew tastes like a typical stout with fruit added, along with vanilla and a distinct toffee-nutty character. finishes on a lightly sour black malt note.
mouthfeel is full bodied with a lightly sour character and a bit more sweet & sour than a stout usually calls for. the nitro-tap produces a silky smooth texture and ease of drinkability.
drinkability is decent. for a barrel-aged stout, the mild sourness takes away from the roasted malt character. could be more assertive on the palate like the aroma. there is a bit of a rift between the aroma and taste profile, which is curious, but does not necessarily take away from the overall enjoyment. cheers!
