This dark lager combines the characteristics of three winter beer styles. All three of these styles traditionally come from the colder harsher areas of Europe. The styles are (1) Black Beer (aka schwartzbier) originating from the former East Germany); (2) Rye Beer which at one time was only made in hardier areas of Eastern and Baltic Europe; and (3) Bock Beer which is widely known as a higher alcohol lager of Northern Germany. Our Black Rye Bock has a distinctive bitter chocolate palate and black color reminiscent of a black beer. The spiciness from the rye malt shines through in the flavor. The high alcohol balanced with malty sweetness rounds out this cold season bock. Smooth drinking with a punch makes this lager a perfect quaffer for our Arctic winter.

Half pint draft at GBH
L: jet black with a thin beige head quick to recede to a collar - enticing!
S: figs, raisins, dark fruit, malty sweetness
T: follows the nose with some nice bitterness, not getting any "bite" from the rye
M: very balanced especially considering it's a hybrid of several styles, nice carb, pretty chewy for a lager
O: impressive - only drawback is it was served ice cold- it really opens up as it warms, definitely will be one of my "go to" GBH beers.

A - Pours a small off-white head that settles fairly quickly but leaves a nice ring of lace. The beer is black with ruby highlights.
S - A fairly sweet aroma, a bit of vanilla, roasted malts and a definite bourbon smell.
M - Medium in body with light carbonation. Creamy and smooth.
T - The bourbon is the dominate trait in the taste. It's complemented by some roasted malts, vanilla, and a bit of a sweetness.
A pretty solid offering all around, glad I got a chance to try it.

Had at the brewpub with a nice flatiron steak, taters, and bread pudding. Aged in Jim Beam barrels.
Pours a dark ruby black with an off white head that reduces fairly quickly to a skim and ring and leaves decent lacing.
Nose is full of barrel essence, bourbon and vanilla, oak, deep malty rye and high gravity lager sweetness.
Taste is quite nice. Vanilla and bourbon flavors from the oak ride gracefully across a bock-like base with a little bit more roastiness. Very smooth on the palate.
Mouthfeel is very nice, carbonation is probably just a tiny touch low, but really not significant, and it works well with the barrel flavors anyway. Definitely more viscous than your average lager, but nothing too chewy.
Drinks quite easily. Really neat to have a beer that is so blatantly barrel aged without having the usual burn of alcohol flavors, really accents the beer well and is prominent without being totally dominant.
Overall a very unique and well crafted beer. Once again, the barrel aging is exquisitely done by Kevin and the folks at Glacier Brewhouse. Really wish i could share with the rest of the world how amazing and innovative the barrel aging is at this establishment. Barrel aged black rye bock is just another example. Definitely excited for this years 12 days of barleywine. Great beer.
