fun beer, cool recipe, a touch safe to me unfortunately, but its exciting nevertheless, as so many fruited ipa types rely on citrus or tropical fruit, so few go in the berry direction, and this seems natural, even if the fruit is light handed or mostly fermented out and the hops are light enough that this drinks more pale ale to me, but its tasty, fresh at the source, and clever enough to be memorable. pinkish orange in my glass, unfiltered apparently, short white head and fast fade but lots of bubbles remain. the nose on this is more hops than fruit, a little acidity from the berries but more ipa first, pine and grapefruit notes suggest simcoe, not sure what all is in here, light melon and some grassiness too, and middle of the road bitterness, not out of balance even with what appears to be a pretty light grain base. the flavor has the fruit up front and the hops on the back end, but their interaction is all through this, jammy berries offsetting hop bite, tangy fruit cutting through the oily hop character, its a nice back and forth, and i do like this being on the dry side even if that comes at the expense of more blackberry potency. cranberry and pinot noir nuance, candied citrus from the hops, light dankness. the hops selected and these berries actually go great together, and while the base beer could be a little more assertive and also refined, i think this is a real success. it begs for unique culinary applications and overall i was stoked on this pint. sneaky strong too, this hides it well. these guys make better beer than i think they get credit for most of the time, i was impressed with my visit here!
