Brown pour, more brown than black, thin 1/4" tan head vanishes quickly. Aroma was heavy wood, boozy heat and plenty of coconut and caramel.

Virgin oak really jumped on this one, more in common with French rather than American oak. Gets some toffee to jump, mild chocolate/vanilla impingement. What seemed like a boozy aroma was swallowed by a lot of the flavors here thankfully, nice soft, smooth, not overly sweet mouthfeel.

Nice stuff.

On-tap at FoBAB 2011. Served in a taster pint. I love Big Woody, so I figured this would probably be worth a ticket.

A - Thin tan foam settles to pretty much nothing. Initially appears black, but reveals some clarity and color when held to the light.

S - Big milk chocolate flavors mingle with caramel, oaky vanilla and coconut. Somewhat simplistic and sweet, but very inviting and with minimal alcohol presence.

T - Taste is fairly similar - melted Hershey's chocolate bars of the milky variety, light caramel, plenty of vanilla and surprisingly little overt wood flavor for something aged this long in a barrel. No booze present.

M - Smooth, medium-full body, low carbonation, and a surprisingly clean finish with minimal barrel tannin presence. Very silky and soft.

D - A really easy drinking barrel-aged stout. I'm surprised how successful the fresh Czech oak was here, as Splinter Black was a huge disappointment for me. Perhaps the Alaskan weather keeps the barrels from expanding and contracting too much. Another winner from Glacier.

For an imperial stout it definitely seems to lean just as brown as it does black. The aroma has a wet wood component to it, husky coconut shell and plenty of alcohol.

Taste is complex, lots going on, chocolate, wood, the inside of the coconut this time, toffee, a twinge of vanilla. Pretty hefty.

This was matured in virgin Czech oak barrels for 2.5 years.

A rich reward.
