Hefeweizen
The most famous ale style of Germany, Hefeweizen translates to “Yeast Wheat.” In Germany the style is called “Weissbier” meaning white beer, due to its yellowish-white tinge derived from the pale wheat malt which makes up 50% of the malt profile. Hefeweizen uses a special, unusual yeast strain that imparts powerful banana and clove-like aromatics to the beer. It is an unfiltered beer and is cloudy from suspended yeast.

This was the first of my wife's flight at a recent trip to Territorial. This beer features a cloudy amber golden color that seems to glow in the light. The head is a frothy neon white color that takes forever to dissipate. There appears to be high carbonation based on the high amount of small bubbles racing toward the surface of the beer. 4.25/5 The aroma is typical of the Hef style in that it features strong notes of banana and clove from the yeast but these notes are not overpoweringly strong like in many Hefs made here in the US. The banana and clove are pleasantly sweet with a bit of floral hops backing them up. There is a bit of orange peel and a coriander-esque pepperiness to go with the banana and clove notes. 4/5 The flavor is every bit like that of the aroma with a light fruity sweetness leading off right before the banana comes in, adding even more fruity sweetness, but not a crazy amount. A bit of clove, orange peel, and pepper comes in right after the banana before a floral hop note enters to finish off the profile. No real bitterness with this beer at all. 4/5 This beer is not dry or viscous, rather targeting a middle ground that leaves the mouth coated but wet. No dryness or lingering dryness here. There is a light carbonation tickle up front but nothing unpleasant. 4/5 Very good and true to style Hef that does a very good job of sticking to the traditional German style and flavors. Nicely balanced and not overly sweet. Easily sessionable. 4/5

A straight forward interpretation of the style that was spot on. Very nice.
