Napoleon called Berliner Weisse the Champagne of the North. The Comité Champagne sent us a letter saying we can't call it that. This Straw-blonde wheat ale is very light, slightly tart and highly carbonated. You can drink it straight or mit Schuss (with a shot of flavored sweet syrup).

I enjoyed the plain version of this beer last year and rated it a 4.0 across the board. I finally tried the beer "mit Schuss" with the woodruff syrup. I liked it. It turns the beer slightly greenish-yellow, and imparts a very light 'apple-y' taste without the sweetness that I thought would be there. I'll stick with the original rating after this experience.

Rather than include this in my wife's flight, she ordered this as a full pint since she likes Berliners so much (without the syrups by the way). Luckily, I got a taste. The beer is a cloudy golden color that seems to glow just a bit in the light. It features a white frothy head that dissipates fairly slowly for a Berliner, and once dissipated it forms an ultra sleek skim on the surface. There is light carbonation visible in the form of tiny bubbles rising slowly toward the surface. 4/5 The aroma is mainly tart with a lemon juice note that really sticks out. There is a bit of sweetness, but not much, in the form of light caramel and citrus fruit. There also seems to be a light citrus hop to the aroma as well. 4/5 The flavor of this beer is one of the best for a Berliner that I have had. It is not overly tart/sour and it features a light caramel sweetness with a somewhat dry citrus hop. There is a light lingering sourness upon swallowing but it is not overpowering or unpleasant. There is a slight undertone of wheat that pervades throughout the flavor profile. 4.25/5 Light, crisp, lightly dry, and light lingering dryness are the main characteristics of the mouthfeel. Light carbonation tickle comes out throughout the profile but this beer stays fairly smooth throughout due to the wheat with the lemony lightness providing the crispness. 4/5 Very good Berliner that is not overpoweringly sour. Well rounded with it being both crisp and smooth. The flavor is reflected in the aroma very nicely. 4/5
