Doppelbock is a strong, malty lager developed by 18th-century German monks. This “liquid bread” provided their only sustenance during periods of fasting. They named the first doppelbock “Salvator.” Today, most doppelbock style lagers are given a name ending in “ator” in homage to the original. Penetrator is lagered (cold stored) for several weeks in the traditional manner, producing a beer smooth, malty and bready enough for any monk.

Pours a dark brown color with a minimal head that lasts quite a while. Aroma of dark fruits and roasted malts. Taste is sweet with a pleasant hoppy finish.

Unfortunately named but otherwise tasty doppelbock. Warm and malty, with caramel and toffee notes. The 10% abv is present on the nose and sip, just right for the onset of these colder months. Enjoyable sipper.

I'm trying this at the brewery. It poured a clear amber with no head and no lace. The scent had caramel malt presence. The taste had dark fruit and plum presence with boozy finish. The mouthfeel is fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall it's a good and big beer.

I originally rated this beer in 2016, but going by memory the 2023-2024 release tastes better than any of the previous years. It's also at 10.0% abv this year, so that's a significant change from 2016.
2024 version edit: The abv is 10.3% this year.
