I picked this up on a whim at Appalachian Vintners in Asheville because it said it was brewed with pine sprouts and I like that sort of thing. I would be very interested in having this beer fresh. The bottle I have is about two years out of date.
Well glade I did. Many interesting flavors here. Yes, there is the pine resin, there are herbs, and honey and toast, and grass. Honey smell. Brownish amber color. Decent head and lacing. Going well with my peanuts. I like braggots and grisettes.

this is insanely interesting, the bottle has been staring at me from the shelf for some time now, and i had to finally pull the trigger, never heard of these guys before, but this looks so interesting, a mead maker apparently, doing beer with honey and scots pine, supremely different, which is exactly what i wanted today. its perfectly clear from the bottle almost all the way down to the bottom, golden color, and holds its white head, although im drinking this pretty quickly. it smells kind of bad, super oxidized and skunky, even from the brown bottle, like this has been under the bright cooler door lights too long or something, and like i may have missed its moment, it almost stinks up the room like an old becks or something, not nice, but as i settle into it, through that, i get the honey, the spruce type pine, and some generic pale maltiness, definitely old though. flavor is surprisingly good given the lackluster at best aroma, the pine strikes me immediately as different, herbal, fresh, and even healthy or something, highly botanical and weird, but very cool. the honey is next, very sweet for a flash but its hoppy too, some bitterness comes in, and the pine and honey together balance well. the aftertaste is approaching amazing, incredibly unique honey profile here, and the pine softens some, and also seems distinct from other pine/spruce beers out there. the yeast is a little funny, and the skunk character is still off the charts. if this was fresh i bet it would rule. the nose is just totally dead from age, but the beer still has some merit, at least in my opinion, as its so original. clever and cool, ill buy others from these guys if i ever see them, im now dying to try this fresh when it doesnt smell so lousy. if this was fresh it would slay...
