Mungátt (Old Norse: good for mouth) has been developed by Grimfrost, the Swedish viking company, together with Mjödhamnen, Sweden's most distinguished mead and ale producer. With it, we would like to invite You on a journey back to the Viking Age when honeyed ale was one of the favourite festive beverages. Enjoy this fresh, supple brew with friends or a good meal.

Pours an opaque murky brown, brief fizz, no head or lacing. Nose is baked apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, prunes. Taste is far less sweet than I anticipated, leading up front with some hop bitterness, followed by dark bread, stewed prunes, and orange peel. As it warms, the sweetness comes more pronounced, matching its aroma a bit more. There's a pronounced boozy kick to it as well, though not overwhelming until it warms up closer to room temp. Mouthfeel is has some viscosity to it, while the finish is rather dry. Seems pretty approachable for the style.

Poured cold (as recommended) from an 11.2-ounce / 330-ml bottle into a tulip glass. Body is the color of mahogany, maybe SRM 37-38, with a ruby highlight here and there and an evanescent light-tan head that fades away without a trace. This is rich and complex, similar in character to a dubbel. Caramel, dark bread, and dried fruit (figs, raisins), with a silky mouthfeel and a slightly peppery hop kick. Well attenuated, not overly sweet, and with a mostly dry finish. One taste will tell you that this is very well crafted - and worthy of a Viking drinking horn!
