A collab with DOT Brew, served in a 440ml can, the usual WW design, but with colours.
Top: generous, two inches of tan head, long retention into patchy lacing.
Colour: dark brown and hazy. Not quite stout-like, nevertheless, light doesn’t really get trough.
Smell: roasted sweet malts, coffee, toffee and some fruits which I’m unable to identify (figs?).
Taste: fruity first, then other flavours join the party, coffee, raw cocoa powder, smoked malts. Feels very fresh, it confuses your senses as you see a stout-like beer, but somehow it doesn’t taste what your brain predicts, well, black IPA for you. Bitterness kicks in later. The body could be heavier, being slightly lighter than medium, carbonation is medium, although it feels fresh and sparkly (the senses again). Decent kick from the alcohol.
Quite dry finish leaving you with pure ground coffee aftertaste.
As it warms, it gets more IPA-like and fruity. Also gets smoother, ideal temperature seems to be 15 degrees Celsius, again.
Summary: enjoyable, different, I really liked this. This is how I always imagined how a cross between stout and IPA should be. Definitely not for everyone, but absolutely worth a try if you’re open for new, exciting experiments.

look: two finger tan coloured head with very good retention, beer is a very dark brown to black colour, no light bleeding through.
smell: hop aroma dominates over malt, lots of tropical fruit flavour, mango and papaya, pink grapefruit and orange, resin-y hop flavour, dank, hint of roasted malt, caramel, intriguing anyway.
taste: it’s a weird one now, the malt and the hop flavours don’t really gel, there’s the smokey roasted malt flavour, lot of coffee hint of dark chocolate, and then there’s the tropical fruit flavours from the hops, lot of mango, papaya, some citrus fruit, resin-y dank hop flavour, and the balance of these is just off, not a bad tasting beer, just a bit strange, medium bitterness on the finish, malt and fruit flavours linger.
feel: medium bodied, medium carbonation, somewhat oily, drinkable enough, some warming from the alcohol, lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue.
overall: i’m a fan of black ipa, and i’m a fan of wicklow wolf too, but this isn’t their best work, oh well, not too bad though.
