look: two finger rocky tan coloured head which quickly dissipates to a thin layer of bubbles, beer is a very dark brown colour, opaque.

smell: it smells downright weird but quite nice, nice malt character, black bread, brown bread, that pepper is definitely there and it’s oddly please feel, nutmeg, spice, lot of vanilla, milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, dark fruits, plum and fig, treacle, molasses, let’s give it a go.

taste: bloody weird, it is nice, quite nice, but a little overwhelming, so much going on, first of all the malt flavour is quite nice, black bread, caramel, toffee, treacle, molasses, nice bit of vanilla, although for all those sweet flavours it isn’t necessarily that sweet, really earthy, cold coffee, nutmeg spice, peppery spice, dark chocolate, super herbal, floral, like some strange liqueur, medium bitterness on the finish, mad stuff altogether, different but nice.

feel: medium to full bodied, light carbonation, very smooth, creamy, lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue, plenty of alcohol warming, lot of spice, too much for my taste.

overall: gotta give it to the lads down in newtownmountkennedy, they don’t make dull beers, can’t say i’ve had anything like this before, i like it well enough, but it’s properly strange, fun, good first beer of 2021.

Ooooh, the good times, Wicklow Wolf made a limited batch again!

On the 440ml can it says:

Imperial Mexican chocolate cake stout.
Endangered species No.14

Ingredients: water, barley, oats, hops (not listed which ones), Vincentian cocoa, Mexican cinnamon, Pasilla pepper, coffee, vanilla, nutmeg, lactose, yeast.

What a list! Sounds really exciting, can’t wait to have a go.

Top: forms 2” of (light) brown -not tan- head, retention time is average, the bubbles are more soapy than creamy. It fades into practically no lacing.

Colour: jet black, under a close look it has coffee/cola like hue on the edges, when kept against a strong light source. When the froth is gone, looks like crude oil in a glass. Fantastic.

Smell: one word: crazy. So many spices and herbs, reminds me of Unicum (it’s a herb liquor/medicine like Jagermeister). Smoked malts, rum, chocolate, orange peel, the nutmeg is definitely there. Raw cane sugar. Insanely complex.

Taste: follows the nose. Roasted and smoked malt backbone with a huge variety of spices and herbs. Silky smooth, full bodied, and really strong (yet, not boozy). Med- carbonation at first, then after a few minutes it becomes low.

Dry finish, the bitterness kicks in just before it goes down with a smoky, peppery aftertaste. Good warmth after the sip, thanks to the 10.5% ABV and the peppers.

Summary: WOW. Strong, complex, intense. Excellent and unique. I would not drink on a regular basis, as it reminds me too much of Unicum/medicine, but it is just me and my personal weirdness towards that type of hard liquor. I’d have the S’mores/Tiramisu over this, oh well, sweet tooth... Unfortunately it’s a small batch again and quite hard to buy even in Ireland, so I don’t expect many reviews... WW is at it again.
